Additional Notes: Such crosses were worn throughout Ukraine and Russia as part of the traditional folk costume together with other necklaces and elements of jewelry. Typically a large cross such as this would be too heavy to incorporate into a beaded necklace so it would hang on a ribbon separately and could be tied to the necessary length to complement the other necklaces. There is a loop on the back through which the ribbon can be tied. A cross like this would have played much the same role as dukach jewelry and would have been worn in the same manner. Comparative reference image included above to show how similar crosses were worn. The size of this cross makes is particularly desirable and rare and would have been a very special piece for the woman who owned it.
