Description
Origin: Slovakia | Trencin region | Trenčianska Teplá
Era: Early 20th century (circa 1910-1930)
Condition: good; noticeable age spotting and scattered stains; minor yellow color transfer around embroidery; wear to original woven wool waist ties; currently more suited for display, but could likely be professionally cleaned if you intend to wear it
Measurements (with garments laying flat):
Waistband: 26.5″ across
Length: 30″
Additional Notes: Scarce apron from Trenčianska Teplá or one of the neighboring villages. Made of very fine linen or cotton with extensive embroidery and openwork designs across the middle. The edges are trimmed with black and yellow handmade bobbin lace. A truly striking piece. This region of Slovakia is known for its incredible embroidered costumes and are often considered some of the richest in the whole country. This is a relatively early example and the colors indicate that it would have likely been worn by a married woman in mid to low-mourning or during Lent. Younger girls tended to wear brighter colors such as red and orange while full mourning dress would have been embroidered entirely in white and black. The apron would have been worn together with a blouse featuring sleeves embroidered in the same colors. Folds neatly into a small bundle to preserve the pleats.
