Additional Notes: Heavy, black dyed skirt with polished cotton facing fabric along the bottom hem. Woman in Schwalm often wore multiple skirts at once, the number depending on the occasion, age and wealth of the wearer. This particular skirt could have been worn alone or as the top skirt worn over any number of slightly progressively longer skirts (so that the hems of each would be seen). Each lower skirts was finished in a different way and there were guidelines to what patterns and colors of trim were worn together (the skirts themselves were always navy/black). Finely pleated at the top and sewn into a narrow waistband.
