Description: A striking album showcasing traditional Slovak folk costumes from the private collection of the author. The book is organized into 65 costume variations (by village/village cluster) represented in the collection and sorted by ethnographic region. As the book only covers costumes collected by the author over the past few decades, it is neither a comprehensive nor scholarly work, but rather a visually captivating album dedicated to showcasing a mix of Slovak costumes through beautiful color photographs by photographer Peter Benkus and personal commentary by the collector. Hundreds of costumes in all, primarily women’s with a sampling of children’s and men’s costumes as well. Not included are costumes from areas that went out of use early in the twentieth century (such as those of eastern Slovakia) or those that were not available on the market (including the old Hungarian regions of southern Slovakia). However, the book makes up for these omissions by including a wide variety of everyday and festive costumes from the second and third quarters of the twentieth century from the regions most heavily represented in the collection (Podpolanie, Horehronie, Novohrad) that have heretofore been overlooked in books on the topic. Bright, detailed photos printed on high quality paper, weighing over 5 pounds.
