Description: The book presents the history and current state of traditional costumes in the Kalmyk people of Russia. The Kalmyk are a branch of the Oirat Mongols, whose ancient grazing-lands spanned present-day parts of Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia and China. The Kalmyks live primarily in the Republic of Kalmykia, a federal subject of Russia. Kalmykia is located in the southeast European part of Russia, between the Volga and the Don rivers. The Kalmyks are the only inhabitants of Europe whose national religion is Buddhism. Their costumes have strong Asian influences further influenced by their Buddhist spirituality. The book is illustrated with a couple dozen color and black/white photos and clothing patterns.
