Description
Origin: Ukraine | Central region
Era: Turn of the century (circa 1890-1910)
Condition: good; a number of small holes and thin spots; missing waist ties; recommended for display only
Measurements (with garments laying flat):
Waist: 32″ around
Length: 27.5″
Additional Notes: Iconic style woman’s skirt from central Ukraine. Made of characteristic , thinly woven wool with black velvet strips and trim along the bottom edge. Old wool facing fabric along the inside hem. This type of skirt was worn throughout the region and can be seen in historical photographs like the two shown above. The skirt remains durable enough for wear, but given its age and condition it would be best suited for a historic collection or display where the holes wouldn’t be noticeable. Ukrainian skirts with this type of finely woven pattern are becoming increasingly rare as they went out of style in the early 20th century in favor of less expensive solid fabrics. A fine example.
