Additional Notes: This stunning garment has features and ornamentation typical of northern African design as seen in traditional garments from Algeria and Tunisia from the period of the Ottoman Empire. Made of black wool cloth with metallic soutache trim and couching embroidery, clearly influenced by military uniforms. The garment appears to have been altered at some point to make it more fashionable for western wear. The entire bottom half as well as the black lining and shoulder pads have been added. Possibly collected during the North African Campaign of WWII and later elegantly tailored in keeping with western urban fashions of the period. The top half is all original, including the red lining and mother of pearl (?) buttons. Demonstrates the longstanding popularity of ethnic garments in fashionable European circles. A fine wearable garment, although you may wish to replace or remove the lining as it is somewhat shattered. Suitable for both men and women.
